Season Is Over
Looking back at the season the Rangers had some high hopes for this season. Images of the Rangers holding the cup in May have come to an end. The Rangers do have some bright points though, as their youngsters showed a lot of promise. Dubinsky, Callahan, Staal, Girardi, Dawes, and Koporskwi all showed poise in their first Stanley Cup playoffs. The Rangers will head into the offseason with all out questions. Will Jagr, Shanahan, Straka be back? Will the Rangers resign agitator Sean Avery? What will the Rangers do with head coach Tom Renney? All these questions need to be answered in the offseason. Hopefully the Rangers will find a gem in the draft.
Well even though the Rangers are done, LETS GO RANGERS for next year.

Tisk Tisk to the Rangers
Game 1
How can you go up 3-0 in a game and lose? The first game of the series and the Rangers set the tone. Then they have mental lapses and the Penguins scored two goals in under 20 seconds, not once, but twice. Unacceptable. There is no other way around it. The Rangers lost their composure and deserved to lose this game. If the Rangers playoff run ends in the round, they need look no further to find out where they let it slip away. They looked like a bunch of
VQUZESHUF.
Game 2
This game was a lot different than game one. This one ended up being a 2-0 win for the Penguins. A hard fought effort in both sides, with King Henrik playing amazing. The Rangers ended up getting burned as the Pens scored on the power play. I do not mean to toot my own horn, but one of my keys to the series was, STAY OUT OF THE BOX! The Penguins power play is too good. The Rangers also did not put to much pressure on Marc-Andre Fluery.
Game 3
This one hurt to watch. Rangers go down 3-1 after the first period. Painful to watch. Penguins scored two goals with under 3 minutes to play in the first. Ouch. One of them of course was a power play goal. Rangers come out in the second battle back to tie the game at 3. Penguins call a timeout and they still can not stop the Rangers momentum. This is the one, the Rangers are going to win tonight, the garden is electric. The Ryan Hollweg takes a stupid penalty. EARTH TO HOLLWEG, WHEN A PLAYER TURNS HIS BACK TO YOU....YOU CAN NOT HIT HIM....THAT IS A PENALTY....YOU HAVE BEEN IN THE LEAGUE FOR 3 YEARS....LEARN THE RULES. Penguins power play comes on to the ice and scores. The garden is once again deflated and the Pens win the game 5-3. On top of that, Rangers suffer injuries to Blair Betts (puck to the face), Chris Drury (unknown injury), and after the game Sean Avery (lacerated spleen). The hits just keep on coming for the Rangers.
Well as stated before, the Rangers have dug themselves in a deep hole. Near impossible to get of. It will be interesting to see how the Rangers respond in game 4. Will they be swept by the Penguins in their own building? Game 4, Thursday at 7 P.M.
*Note: The Penguins have one their first 7 playoff games in a row. The last team to do that was the 1994 Stanley Cup Champion, New York Rangers. They say history has a way of repeating itself. We shall see.
Going to be tough, but as always, LETS GO RANGERRRRRRSSS!!!!!

On to the Second Round
In the West we have two outstanding series.
Detroit Red Wings vs. Colorado Avalanche
The Detroit/Colorado rivalries of the late 90's were classic. You could just feel that these two teams hated each other. This matchup should be interesting. The Red Wings struggled in the first round with the underdog Nashville Predators. After benching starter Dominik Hasek, the Wings relied on back Chris Osgood. The veteran goaltender did not disappoint. The Wings played with passion under Osgood and eventually ended the upstart Predators playoff run. The Avs, have also playing with passion. Their veterans, especially Joe Sakic have been stepping up. The more interesting story, is Jose Theodore. The Avs netminder is playing for a contract. He hasn't seemed this inspired since he won the MVP a few years back with Montreal. I think this one goes the distance.
I am going with the Avalanche in 7.
San Jose Sharks vs. Dallas Stars
San Jose had to go the distance with the Calgary Flames. The Sharks look uninspired the whole series. They got hit hard and hit often. Patrick Marleau seemed to be the only Shark playing with passion. Game 7, the Sharks played inspired and it showed, as they won 5-3. They chased one the best netminders in the game in Kiprusoff. In order to beat the Dallas Stars, they will need that effort every game. Dallas on the other hand, just knocked off the defending Stanley Cup champions. They dominated, but could not close out the deal against the Ducks. They won, but they could have won the series a lot sooner. Just like the Sharks, if the Stars played uninspired, they will lose. So is this year that the Sharks finally make it out of the second round? I am betting against them.
Dallas Stars in 6. Break out the VQUZESHUF.
In the East, we also have some great matchups.
Montreal Canadiens vs. Philadelphia Flyers
I owe the Boston Bruins an apology. I said they would be swept, but the Bruins took the Habs to the distance. Montreal rookie Carey Price, had moments of brilliance. He also had some games that I am sure he would like to forget. When it came to Game 7 and pressure, Price shined. The Habs are lethal on the Powerplay, so if Philly ends up in the box, prepare to see the score board light up. On the flip side, Philly cooled down the hottest team and the hottest player in the league. When Philly played puck control, they dominated Washington. They need puck control and discipline play to beat Montreal. Daniel Briere leads all players with 11 points in the postseason and his stellar play must continue in order for Philly to stand a chance. Personally, I do not think Philly's dmen can stand up to Montreal's offense.
Canadiens in 6.
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. New York Rangers
Out of all the possible matchups for the Rangers in the second round, this is the only one I did not want to see. Pittsburgh just dispatched the Ottawa Senators in 4 games in a relatively easy fashion. Is it Pittsburgh is that good, or is Ottawa that bad? We will find out in this series. Evgeni Malkin has been a force in the playoffs and does not appear to be slowing down. Marc-Andre Fluery is playing the best of hockey of life. Add to that Sidney Crosby, and the Rangers could be in trouble. The Rangers will look to their veterans more than ever in this series. Gomez, Shanny, "Captain Clutch"(Chris Drury), and a revitalized Jagr need to lead the way for the Rangers. The Rangers rookies have been good and show they can handle the playoff pressure. That will need to continue. Henrik Lundqvist will need to continue playing absurd in order to stop Pittsbugh's offense. In my opinion, there are two major keys to this series. 1.) The Rangers need to stay out of the box. Pittsburgh's Powerplay is lethal and taking penalties will doom the Rangers. 2.) Sean Avery. Love him or hate him, the guy is a great hockey player. His antics got in the head of the best netminder of all time. He will need to keep it up to knock Fluery off his game, but at the same time, not become a distraction for the Rangers.
This is going to be a good series. I believe it is going to be a lot closer than most people think. The experts seem to forget the Rangers won the season series between the two teams. Once again, this is a Blueshirts Blog, so I gotta go with my Rangers.
Rangers win this series in 6 games.

Rangers Win Series 4-1
When I walked into the arena, it was outstanding to look around to see die-hard blueshirts such as myself. I would have to say the arena was filled with 60% Devils fans and 40% Ranger fans. Before the puck dropped, there was Lets Go Devils chants, followed by Lets Go Rangers chants, and vice versa.
The Devils came out quick and scored the first goal. The Devil fans erupted, with cheers of profanity I can not say, followed by heckling the Rangers goaltender, Henrik Lundqvist. It was short lived. 20 seconds after the Devils scored, the Rangers struck back tying the game at 1. The Devils announcer hadn't even announced the Rangers goal yet. The Ranger fans went nuts, including myself went crazy. Then the fans started to chant "Marty, Marty!", heckling Devils goaltender, Matin Brodeur. The chants would only get louder, as the Rangers scored two more goals to go up 3-1. After the first, the Ranger fans were insane and the Devils fans were silent.
The second period started out with more of the same, as Chris Drury scored to put the Rangers up 4-1. At this point, it looked like smooth sailing. The Devils finally caught a break in the second. The luck would come from a shot from Bryce Salvador. The Devils defensemen, took a slap shot from center ice to dump the puck in. The shot hit Rangers foward Brandon Dubinsky in the glove, hit the ice, hit the post, and then hit Lundqvist's back and went in. After that, the Devils would score on a 5 on 3 powerplay to make the game 4-3 heading into the third. Another bad break for the Rangers, as the puck went in off defensemen Fedor Tyutin. None the less, the were down 3 goals, but entered the third trailing by 1.
The Devils fans were back and chanting to start the 3rd. However, the could not silence the chants of "Let's Go Rangers!!!" and "Henrik!" from the Ranger fans. The Devils were playing with desperation, throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the Rangers. The Rangers stood tall though, weathering every storm. Then a mistake by the Rangers, led to a penalty shot for the Devils. John Madden was tripped on a breakaway by Rangers defensemen, Dan Girardi with 7:08 seconds left. Madden went backhand on Lundqvist who stopped him cold. The Ranger crowd chanted "Henrik!" until it felt the very foundation of the building was coming down. The Rangers held on to win, as Brandon Dubinsky netted an empty netter to put the game out of reach. The Rangers won the game and the series.
Afterwards the traditional NHL post series handshake took place. Of course, there was drama. Martin Brodeur shook every players hand, except for 1. Sean Avery extended his hand to Brodeur, who just skated away. Avery would later say this about Brodeur," "Everyone talks about how much class I don't have, well it's the end of the series and men go to war against each other," Avery said. "I guess he forgot to shake my hand. I don't know if anyone saw that. Of course I was going to shake his hand." (http://scores.espn.go.com/nhl/recap?gameId=280418011). Nothing like adding a little more fuel to the fire for next year. I personally would have called him a VQUZESHUF.
Well the Rangers are now waiting for an opponent in Round 2. Nothing feels better than taking out your arch-rivals in their arena. All I can say is bring them on, and as always, LETS GO RANGERSSSSS!!!!!!!

Playoffs Baby...Eastern Conference Predictions
#1. Montreal vs. #8. Boston
Here is one of the best rivalries in hockey. Expect to see some hard hitting in this series. Don't however expect this one to last to long though. Boston played Montreal 8 times this year, and did not win a single game. They playoffs is a completely different season, but Montreal has owned the Bruins. Therefore I am going with the sweep on this one.
Montreal in 4, break out the broom.
#2. Pittsburgh vs. #7. Ottawa
At the beginning of the season this series would be regarded as an exciting series. With so much offensive firepower on both sides, one would expect this one to go 7 games. However, Pittsburgh has been on fire of late and Ottawa is slumping to say the least. Not to mention, Ottawa's Daniel Alfredsson and Miek Fischer are hurt. A healthy Sidney Crosby and a confident Marc-Andre Fleury send Ottawa into the offseason.
Pens in 5.
#3. Washington vs. #6. Philadelphia
This is going to be great series. Washington has been of the hottest teams in the NHL going into the playoffs abd Alexander the Greats legacy continues to grow. Alexander Ovechkin is the best player in the NHL and something tells me his intensity is going to give Philadelphia a lot of problems. Philly on the other hand was out of the playoffs and then made a run of their own to move into 6th place in the east. A healthy Daniel Briere is a big advantage for Philly. Expect this one to go the distance. I flipped a coin on this series and then changed my mind. I can not go against Ovechkin right now.
Washington in 7.
#4. New Jersey vs. #5. New York Rangers
The fun between these two teams continues. The Rangers and Devils have had some memorable series, with the Rangers usually coming out on top. They have played each other 4 times in the playoffs, with th Rangers winning 3 of those. This season the Rangers took 7 out of 8 against the Devils, but 4 of those wins were in shootouts. In playoff hockey, there aren't any shootouts. Expect these teams to beat the living Hell out of each other. Rangers need there big time players to step up. Drury, Gomez, Shanahan and Jagr need to provide leadership to the Ranger youngsters. The Devils need Elias and Parise to get hot, because without them, the Devils offense does not go. Then there is Martin Brodeur. Arguably the greatest goaltender of all time, his game always shifts to another level in the postseason. On the other side of the ice, expect Henrik Lundqvist to step his game up as well. Lundqvist lead the league in shutouts this year with 10. When Lundqvist is on, he has the ability to steal games just like Brodeur. Expect both netminders to put on a show. This series is going to take a toll on whoever advances. This one could end up having multiple OT games. I personally cannot wait until the puck drops in game 1. Being this is Rangers blog, I got to show my love to the Broadway Blueshirts.
Rangers in 6.
These are my picks and I am sticking to them. If you don't like it, go kiss a VQUZESHUF.
As always, LETS GO RANGEERSSSSSS!!!!!!

Playoffs Baby...Western Conference Predictions
#1. Detroit vs. #8. Nashville
Give Nashville credit for somehow making the playoffs after the fire sale they had this offseason. They have had quite the season, but Detroit looks focused this year. Too much fire power in the motor city for the Predators.
Detroit in 5.
#2. San Jose vs. #7. Calgary
Is this the year San Jose finally gets out of the second round? In order to make it to the second round, they need to beat the Flames. San Jose was experts pick at the beginning of the season to win the Stanely Cup, but do not count off Iginla and co. With Kipper in net and Iron Mike Keenan behind the bench, expect a hard fought series. The Flames will make it a series, but San Jose will come out of this one.
San Jose in 6.
#3. Minnesota vs. #6. Colorado
This is one of the more interesting matchups in the West. Minnesota seems poised to go deep into the playoffs, but Colorado has veteran leadership. Joe Sakic, Ryan Smyth, and Peter Forsberg know what it takes for a long playoff run. On top of that, Jose Theodore has revived his play. I am a huge fan of the Wild, but for some reason I can not turn my back on Sakic.
Colorado in 7.
#4. Anaheim vs. #5. Dallas
Just like Minnesota and Colorado, I feel this is going to be great matchup as well. Anaheim is looking to defend it's title and have the players to do so. Selanne, Niedermeyer, Pronger, Getzlaf, Perr, and many others. Not to mention, they have Jiggy playing his best hockey of his career. However, the Stars aren't going to be pushed around. The stars aquired clutch playoff performer Brad Richards at the trade deadline. He just seems to step up his game when the spotlight is on him. Marty Turco exorcised his demons last season with a spectacular playoff performance. I feel his confidence level will be through the roof. I am going again with the lower seed here.
Dallas in 6.
These are my Western Conference predictions and I am sticking to them. If they are all off, feel free to call me VQUZESHUF. Tomorrow I will have my Eastern Conference predictions.
As always, LETS GO RANGERS!!!!

Word We Created in Class
So for our last class, we came up with a word that could not be found on Google. Clearly, this is not an actual word. The assignment being, when we created this word, we had to add what the word meant. So here is what I think the word VQUZESHUF means.
VQUZESHUF - (noun) is a moose who lives high up in the alps. Similar to an American Moose, this one has only one antler. Sometimes mistaken for the abominable snowman by climbers, this creature is harmless, unless provoked.

Playoff Problems
Another issue the Rangers need to address is out of their hands. The Rangers have some injuries to their key players. Shanahan left the Pittsburgh game on Monday with an undisclosed lower body injury. Scott Gomez is suffering from sore ribs, Blair Betts is still recovering from foot surgery, and Colton Orr is also still sidelined. Shanahan, Gomez, and Blair Betts are key components to a long playoff run. Their health is a major concern of the Rangers. Colton Orr is a tough guy, who the Rangers would need to drop the gloves occasionally so they don't get pushed around. The only thing the Rangers can do in this situation is to rest these guys. Hopefully they will be ready to go come April 9th.
Another issue the Rangers need to focus on is defense. Henrik has been stellar all year, but in order to win championships, you need defense. The Rangers have one of lowest GAA per game however, the defense's inexperience in the playoffs could be an issue. Veteran leaders on the offense will need to be the vocal leaders for a young defense. Take a look, Marc Staal is in his first playoffs series, Dan Giradi is in his second, Rozival and Tyutin are in their third. The Rangers have a young strong core of defensemen, hopefully they will come to play.
The Rangers start a home and home tonight with the Islanders, and then finish off against the Devils on Sunday. The Rangers will lock up a spot in the playoffs tonight with a win or a Washington Capitals loss.
Lets get ready to make noise in the playoffs boys....LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!
Wednesday, April 2, 2008
The Rangers would go back to the Garden on Monday to finish the home and home with the Penguins. The Rangers came out strong, out shooting the Pens 10-1 in the first period, but the score was tied at zero none the less. The Rangers continued their onslaught in the second, only this time they found the back of the net. The Rangers had a 5-3 powerplay, and they scored on an incredibly whacky play. Jagr sent a backhand shot to the net that ricocheted off Penguins goalie Marc Andre Fleury. The puck popped up in the air over the crossbar, hit a Penguins defensemen’s glove, then hit Fleury's helmet and went in. As this was going on, the Rangers Scott Gomez swiped at the puck in the air. The official originally thought Gomez hit the puck with his stick which would disallow the goal. After a lengthy instant replay, the Rangers would receive the goal. The second period would end with the Rangers leading 1-0.
The Penguins came out flying in the third period, as the game seemed to be slipping away. The Rangers tried to weather the storm, but the Pens would even up. The game would end up finishing 1-1, with the game headed into overtime. The Rangers needed the extra point, and you could sense it is his play. The would draw a powerplay, giving them a 4 on 3 advantage. This is where the Rangers would need Captain Clutch, and he delivered. Drury rifled a slap shot through a screened Marc Ander Fleury. This gave the Rangers the win and the valuable point they needed in the tight Eastern Conference. The Rangers leaped into 5th place and the standings, and the Pens stayed in first place in front of idle Montreal.
The Rangers have 3 games left, and trail the 4th place New Jersey Devils by 1 point. The Rangers have a home and home against the Islanders, and finish the regular season against New Jersey at the Prudential Center. The playoffs start on April 9th.
As always, LETS GO RANGERS!!

Back on the Winning Track
The Rangers were back in the Garden on Tuesday to face the high powered offense of the Penguins. The Rangers caught a break though, as Sidney Crosby was sidelined with a high ankle sprain. The Pens still were dangerous with Evgeni Malkin and Marian Hossa. The Rangers came out strong in the first with goals by Sean Avery and Ryan Callahan. However, in the second, the Pens struck back. Quick goals by Jarkko Ruutu and Jordan Staal noted the game at 2. Sensing his team had lost their composure, Head Coach Tom Renney called a timeout. This proved to be a wise move as the Rangers responded. Newly acquired Ranger Fredrik Sjostrom answered the call. 44 seconds after the timeout, Sjostrom stole the puck and scored on a mini-breakaway. After this, the Rangers would not look back. The third period was dominated the Rangers, as goals were scored by Straka and Avery. The Rangers would go on to win by the final of 5-2. Lundqvist looked solid in the win posting 22 saves as he notched his 33rd win of the season.
Notes* Rangers kept Evgeni Malkin in check as he did not register a point. Jordan Staal of the Penguins and Marc Staal of the Rangers continued their sibling rivalry, with Marc coming out on top. Their father was also in attendance. Henrik Lundqvist recorded his 100th victory as a Rangers goaltender, becoming the fastest Rangers goaltender to reach the mark (187 games, the previous record holder was Mike Richter with 198.)
The very next night, the Rangers were back on the ice against the New Jersey Devils in the Prudential Center. This would be the 6th meeting between the two teams this season, with the Rangers having won the previous 5. Henrik Lundqvist would be back in net after playing the night before, but against the Devils this season, King has played out of his mind. Lundqvist has only allowed more than two goals once against the Devils this season. On top of that stat, King Henrik has posted two of his nine shutouts against the Devils as well.
From the drop of the puck, you could feel the intensity of this game. 35 seconds in, David Clarkson and Sean Avery dropped the gloves. Jersey came out flying, as they had a few days rest. The Rangers appeared to just try and weather the storm after playing last night. The Devils would leave the period on top though, as Dainius Zubrus scored a power play goal for the Devils. Martin Brodeur looked sharp as well, as he stopped Martin Straka on a breakaway. The second period began, and this time the Rangers came out flying. They dominated most of the second period, but Brodeur continued his stellar play. At the end of two, the Rangers were still down 1-0.
The third period was exciting to say the least. Back and forth action the whole period, with the Rangers getting the upper hand. Then, with less than 5 minutes left, captain clutch himself, Chris Drury tied the game at 1. Ryan Callahan had the puck behind the Devils net and swooped right out in front of the goal line. He thread a rocket of pass across the crease between two Devil defenders to a wide open Chris Drury. Drury made sure to bury it, as he roofed it up top and knocked off Martin Brodeur's water bottle. The game would end tied at 1, and go into a 4 on 4 overtime.
Overtime was lackluster, as both teams seemed to not want to make a mistake. After 5 minutes of play, the game would go into a shootout. The Rangers would choose Brendan Shanahan, Nigel Dawes, and Ryan Callahan to shoot. The Devils would counter with Jamie Langenbrunner, Brian Gionta, and Zach Parise. The Rangers would go first, and Shanahan would be stopped by Brodeur. Not to be outdone, Henrik Lundqvist stoned Langenbrunner. The Rangers would then send Nigel Dawes out. Dawes came in on Brodeur, faked a shot that froze Brodeur. While Brodeur was trying to reset, Dawes sent a shot on the ice the went 5 hold on Marty. Brodeur shook his head in disbelief. Lundqvist would then turn aside both Gionta and Parise to give the Rangers the 1-0 shootout win. Final score Rangers 2, Devils 1.
Notes* This is the first time the Rangers have beaten the Devils 6 times in one season since 1993-94, the same year the Rangers won the Stanley Cup. Also, Brodeur after the game called Dawes shot lucky, saying he missed his original shot. Dawes was informed of this later and shot back that he got him with a good fake, and the only problem he had with the shot, was the he didn't shoot it as hard as he wanted to.
Here are the Eastern Conference Standings as of before Thursday March 20.

Trade Deadline: Major and Minor Moves
- Atlanta trades Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis to Pittsburgh for Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen, prospect Angelo Esposito and a 2008 first-round draft pick.
This is can either be a great move for the Penguins, or an awful one. Marian Hossa has never really shown up in the playoffs, and assuming the Penguins do not have a mjor meltdown, Hossa will need to step up. With Sid "the Kid", Malkin, Staal, and now Hossa, the Penguins will continue to be an offensive juggernaut. Pascal Dupuis is a solid two-way player, who is an asset on the penatly kill. The Penguins do however lose solid youngsters in this deal and a good prospect in Esposito. If Hossa ends up being a rental and the Penguins do not win the Stanley Cup, this will have been a bad move for Pittsburgh. Atlanta made out real well in this deal because Hossa was not going to resign, so at least they recieved something for him.
- Buffalo sends Brian Campbell and a 2008 seventh-round pick to San Jose for Steve Bernier and a 2008 first-round pick
This is a good move for the Sharks as they needed to sure up their defense. Nabakov (San Jose's goalie) has been superb all year. He needed defensive help though, and in the playoffs defense wins championships. On top of that, Campbell is a fantastic puck moving defenseman, which San Jose needs on their power play. Campbell is a free agent at the end of the season, and he could possibly be just a rental for San Jose. The sharks though now have all the tools for a possible Cup run. Look for the Sharks to finally make it out of the first round of the Playoffs. On the flip side, Buffalo finally recieved something for a player after watching stars Chris Drury and Daniel Briere walk away for free. Steve Bernier is young, solid offensive player. Put him on a line with Vanek, and magic will happen in Buffalo.
- Tampa Bay sends Brad Richards and Johan Holmqvist to Dallas for Jussi Jokinen, Jeff Halpern, Mike Smith and a 2009 fourth-round pick
In the incredibly tough Western Conference, this trade puts the Dallas Stars up top. This could be a deal the brings that cup to Dallas. Brad Richards, who has already been a Stanley Cup MVP, will join the red hot Stars. Richards has experience for a Stanley Cup run. He value rangers from all aspects of the game. Great offensive player, great penalty killer, and a great faceoff man. He is an all around player, which only bolsters the Stars lineup. Johan Holmqvist is a capable backup for Marty Turcp. As Tampa Bay, they might have finally solved their goaltending problem. Mike Smith is young and has a lot of potential. After battling Turco for the number one goaltender spot in Dallas, Smith should be able to be the guy in Tampa. He posted a record of 12-9-0 in Dallas, with a 2.46 GAA and .906 save percentage. Jussi Jokinen is known for scoring in his young career, as well as being dependable in shootouts, while Halpern is a solid 3rd line player. This was a good trade for both teams.
- Montreal sends Cristobal Huet to Washington for a second-round draft pick
Looking to find a replacement for aging netminder Olaf Kolzig, the Capitals somehow managed to snag Cristobal Huet from Montreal. Washington is just out of their Southeast division lead, and have two games at hand against the leaders Carolina. Huet, who can be brillant at times, can give that push the Caps need to make the playoffs. The head scratching thing here is, Montreal, who seems to be playoff bound, is letting their hopes ride on rookie netminder Casey Price. This is a 20 year old kid, playing in Montreal, a city the eat, sleeps and breathes hockey. The kid has the tools, but it will be interesting to see if he can handle the pressure. If not, look for Montreal to turn to their backup, Jaroslav Halak.
- Columbus sends Sergei Fedorov to Washington for Ted Ruth
This was another interesting trade, as Washington made a big splash at the deadline. It would be interesting to see Sergei Fedorov along side fellow countrymen Alexander Ovechkin. "Alexander the Great" has once again lived up to his nickname, and playing with Federov might prove Sergei has some gas still left in the Tank. Columbus recieved Ted Ruth who is a defensemen at the University of Notre Dame. He was selected 46th in last year's draft.
Now to the Rangers deals. The Rangers had plenty of speculation heading into the trade deadline. Tradin Jagr, looking for a puck moving defensemen, and trading AHL goaltender/former first round draft pick Al Montoya. Here are the moves the Rangers made.
St. Louis sends Christian Backman to the New York Rangers for a 2008 fourth-round pick
The Rangers grabbed a defensemen, but not the one anyone anticipated. Backman is a solid defensement, which will help the Rangers. However, the Rangers still do not have a Dman to quarterback their powerplay. It will be interesting to see who Backman plays with, and how he handles New York.
Phoneix sends David LeNeveu, Fredrik Sjostrom, Josh Gratton, and a Conditional draft pick to New York Rangers for Al Montoya, Marcel Hossa.
This was an ok trade for the Rangers. Sjostrom is a solid 4th line player which can replace Ryan Hollweg, (which had me rejoicing) and Gratton is a tough guy. LeNeveu will be a backup to Lundqvist, but with Vallaquiette playing so well, LeNeveu isn't needed. It is good to see the Rangers part ways with Hossa, since he was a waste. Unfortunate that Montoya was traded so late, as his trade value was higher a long time ago, so his stock dropped. At least they got something though.
Time for the big playoff push, and as always LETS GO RANGERS!!!

Rangers Bounce Back
The Rangers had back to back games this past weekend. They played at Buffalo Saturday night and on Sunday night they were back in the Garden to play against the Florida Panthers.
On Saturday, the Rangers came out sharp, but so did the Sabres. It was a hard fought game the whole night. However, in the third period with the game tied at 3, with only 5:05 remaining, Sean Avery scored the game winner. The Rangers continued their dominance of the Sabres this season, as they have won all 3 games they have played. These two points were valuebale as it propelled the Rangers past the Sabres in the tight Eastern Conference. The Rangers moved into 6th place, while the Sabres ended up at the 8th and final spot. With 20 some odd games left for these teams, every point is needed.
Following this game, the Rangers went back to New York to tangle with the Florida Panthers. The Panthers were recently on the verge of competiting in the playoffs, but have dropped 4 of their last 5. The Rangers came out flying once again as they dominated this game from start to finish. They would win the game 5-0 with goals coming from Malik, Gomez, Dawes, Straka, and Jagr. Henrik Lundqvist, who started the night before in Buffalo looked solid in net, as he stopped everything that came his way. Lundqvist would make 23 saves to record his 8th shutout of the season.
The Rangers now have a break until Thursday, when they face off against the Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina is a top their division and is 3rd in the playoffs, despited having only 69 points. The Rangers currently have 72, and sit 6th in the playoffs. Needless to stay, this is another important game for both teams.
On a side note, Jaromir Jagr has scored 2 times in the past 2 games. In the last 15 games, the Rangers are 10-3-2.
As always, LETS GO RANGERS

Rangers Lock Up King Henrik
If you are a Rangers fan, you are estactic this deal is finally done. July 1st was coming way to quickly. If Lundqvist wasn't signed, he would have been a restricted free agent. Now, that has no chance of happening. He is only 25 years old, which means he will only get better. If the Rangers can sure up the blue line, they will be making noise in the playoffs for years. Even though he is young, his track record speaks for itself. He lead the Rangers to the playoffs after a 8 year playoff drought. As stated early, he finished in teh Vezina finalists in his first two years. He is the best goaltender the Rangers have has since #35, Mike Richter.
As stated before, the Rangers need to sure up their defense. Once Brodeur declines (which is hopefully soon), Lundqvist is arguably the best goalie in the league, behind only Vancouver's Roberto Luongo. Lundqvist is virtually unbeatable down low and his positioning is stellar. When the shot is on the ice and below is midsection, he is near impossible to beat. Teams need to beat him upstairs when he drops down. That is their best bet.
Rangers fan rejoice, King Henrik is here. He will be here for at least six more years.

Trade Jagr
The New York Rangers are struggling and the problem starts with their captain. The Rangers were preseason favorites to compete and win the Stanley Cup. However, if the playoffs were to start today, the Rangers would be the 8th seed, just barely making the playoffs. The Rangers are the lowest scoring team in the NHL, and Jagr (being a five time scoring champ), as well as captain deserves a majority of the blame. So far this season, Jagr has only managed 39 points, and only 12 of those being goals. Jagr can not seem to find chemistry with Scott Gomez or Chris Drury. These two guys are arguably the best at their position, and still Jagr continues to struggle. In order to make a postseason push, the Rangers should trade Jagr.
First, ever since Jagr was traded to New York, his salary has partially been paid by the Washington Capitals. This was apart of the trade. Jagr's contract ends this season, meaning if the Rangers are going to resign him, they will have to pay his large salary by themselves. Not to mention, when Jagr becomes a free agent, he can sign anywhere, meaning the Rangers could lose him and not get a thing in return. Another reason to trade Jagr is that teams are looking for an asses to their team for the postseason. Western teams, such as the Red Wings, Sharks, or even the Avalanche are looking fo a player of Jagr's caliber, while the Rangers can acquire those teams young guns, or other prospects. A third reason to trade Jagr, is that he is turning 36. The Rangers have a lot of youth in their farm system and on their actual professional roster. With players like Marc Staal, Brandon Dubinksy, and Nigel Dawes already on the pro roster, where do other young players fit in.? Trading Jagr would be a difficult decision for Rangers Management, but it is the right move. A major trade could be what a team needs to jump start them.

Lundqvist Snubbed
This means the Goaltenders for the East were: Rick DiPietro, Thomas Vokoun, and Tim Thomas.
Lets compare Lundqvist's stats against Rick Dipietro.
Lundqvist - GAA: 2.33Wins: 21Shutouts: 7
DiPietro - GAA: 2.54Wins: 19Shutouts: 2
These are just general stat's. The other two goalies stats don't even compare to Lundqvist as well. It is shocking to see arguably the East's best goalie being snubbed.
